How to Fix Concrete Cracks in Your Driveway
If you have a crack in your concrete driveway, the first question is not how to fix it. The first question is what kind of crack it is. That answer determines whether you are dealing with a cosmetic surface issue you can address yourself in an afternoon, a structural problem that needs a contractor, or a sign that the driveway is approaching the end of its useful life and repair is not the right investment anymore.
Getting this wrong in either direction costs you money. Hiring a contractor for a hairline crack that poses no structural risk is unnecessary. Patching the surface of a crack that is caused by base failure buys you a year or two before the same crack, or a new one, opens up in the same area.
Here is how to read your driveway correctly and make the right call.
Step 1: Identify the Type of Crack
Before you buy anything or call anyone, spend five minutes actually looking at the crack. These are the categories that determine everything that follows.
Hairline Cracks
Hairline cracks are narrow surface cracks, typically less than an eighth of an inch wide, that run along the surface of the slab without visible depth. They are extremely common in concrete driveways of any age and develop as a normal result of concrete curing and minor temperature-related expansion and contraction over time.
Run your fingernail across a hairline crack. If it catches only slightly or not at all, and if the crack feels flush with the surrounding surface, it is a surface crack. If the two edges of the crack sit at different heights when you run your finger across it, that is a different situation.
Hairline cracks are DIY territory in most cases. They are cosmetic, not structural.
Medium Cracks
Cracks between an eighth and a half inch wide that have some visible depth but where both edges of the crack sit at the same height. These are more significant than hairline cracks but may still be manageable with the right repair approach depending on their location, whether they are growing, and what is causing them.

Wide or Structural Cracks
Cracks wider than a half inch, cracks where one edge is higher than the other creating a lip or step, cracks that run the full width of a slab section, or any crack that is visibly growing between seasons. These are structural indicators. The slab is moving, the base beneath it has shifted, or both.
Wide or structural cracks are contractor territory. Surface repair does not fix the underlying cause.
Spider Cracking or Map Cracking
A network of interconnected small cracks spreading across an area of the surface in a pattern that resembles a spiderweb. This is called crazing or map cracking and typically indicates a surface finishing issue from the original pour, where the top layer dried too quickly or was overworked. It is usually cosmetic in early stages but indicates the surface layer is weakening.
Spider cracking requires assessment. In early stages it is cosmetic. In advanced stages it signals that the surface layer is failing progressively.
Step 2: Ask These Questions Before You Decide
Regardless of crack type, answer these four questions before committing to DIY repair or calling a contractor.
Is the crack growing? Compare it to a photo from a year ago if you have one, or mark each end of the crack with a pencil line and check it again in 30 days. A crack that is actively extending or widening is not stable. Repairing an unstable crack is temporary by definition because the forces causing it have not stopped.
Are the two edges of the crack at the same height? Run your hand across the crack. If one side is higher than the other, the slab has moved vertically. This is called differential settlement and it means two sections of the slab are no longer on the same plane. This is a base problem, not a surface problem.
Is water pooling near the crack after rain? Water pooling adjacent to a crack means the crack is already affecting drainage. Water that sits on concrete finds its way into cracks, works into the base beneath, and accelerates further damage. A drainage problem near a crack is a sign the situation is progressing.
How old is the driveway? A driveway that is less than 10 years old with a crack worth repairing is a different situation than a 25-year-old driveway with the same crack. Repairing a crack in a driveway that is already in its final years of structural life delays an inevitable replacement without meaningfully extending the life of the slab. At a certain age, money spent on repair is money that would be better applied toward replacement.
DIY Repair: How to Fix Minor Concrete Cracks Yourself
This applies to hairline cracks and stable narrow cracks where both edges sit at the same height, the crack has not grown in the past year, and the driveway is less than 20 years old and otherwise in good condition.
What You Need
- Concrete crack filler or polyurethane sealant rated for driveways (available at hardware stores)
- Wire brush or angle grinder with a crack chaser blade for cleaning the crack
- Compressed air or a leaf blower
- Backer rod foam for cracks deeper than half an inch
- Putty knife or caulk gun depending on the product
- Concrete sealer for finishing
Step 1: Clean the Crack Thoroughly
This step determines whether the repair holds. Any dirt, debris, vegetation, or loose concrete inside the crack will prevent the filler from bonding correctly.
Use a wire brush to scrub the inside of the crack and remove all loose material. For a more thorough clean, an angle grinder with a crack chaser blade widens and cleans the crack simultaneously, creating a uniform channel that accepts filler more evenly. Follow with compressed air to blow out any remaining dust and debris.
Do not skip this step or rush it. A repair product applied to a dirty crack fails faster than the crack itself would have.
Step 2: Let the Area Dry Completely
Concrete crack fillers do not bond correctly to wet surfaces. If it has rained recently or you washed the driveway to clean it, wait at least 24 hours for the concrete to dry completely before applying any filler.
Step 3: Apply Backer Rod for Deep Cracks
If the crack is deeper than half an inch, push foam backer rod into the crack before applying filler. Backer rod fills the depth of the crack and gives the filler a surface to bond against rather than requiring you to fill the entire depth with product. This produces a better bond and a more flexible repair that handles temperature movement over time.
Step 4: Apply the Crack Filler
For hairline and narrow cracks, a concrete crack filler applied from a bottle or caulk tube works well. Follow the product instructions for application rate and working time.
Fill the crack slightly above the surrounding surface to account for settling as the product cures. Do not overfill significantly. A slight overfill that can be tooled flush is better than an underfill that leaves a depression.
For wider cracks being addressed at the DIY level, a two-part epoxy or polyurethane concrete repair product provides a stronger bond than standard filler. These products are available at hardware stores and are worth the additional cost for any crack wider than a quarter inch.
Step 5: Tool the Surface Flush
While the filler is still workable, use a putty knife to smooth it flush with the surrounding concrete surface. Remove any excess that has spread beyond the crack edges.
Step 6: Allow Full Cure Time
Follow the product's specified cure time before allowing foot or vehicle traffic on the repaired area. Most concrete crack fillers require at least 24 hours before foot traffic and longer before vehicle traffic. Rushing this step causes the repair to fail prematurely.
Step 7: Seal the Driveway
Once the repair has cured fully, apply a concrete sealer to the entire driveway surface, not just the repaired area. Sealing after a crack repair protects the repair itself and the surrounding concrete from water penetration that causes further cracking. It also produces a consistent surface appearance rather than a visible patch.
If your driveway has not been sealed recently, this is the right time to do the whole surface.
Where DIY Ends and a Contractor Begins
Be honest with yourself about this line. A repair that holds for two years before the same crack reopens is not a successful repair. It is two years of delay before addressing the actual problem.
Call a contractor when:
- The crack is wider than half an inch
- One edge of the crack is higher than the other
- The crack is growing between seasons
- Multiple cracks have appeared across the driveway surface
- Water pools near the crack or drainage has changed since the crack appeared
- The same area has been repaired before and the problem returned
- The driveway is more than 20 years old and showing multiple problems simultaneously
- Spider cracking covers a significant portion of the surface
Any one of these conditions means the problem is structural or systemic. A contractor's assessment tells you whether repair is viable, what repair actually involves at a structural level, or whether replacement is the more cost-effective direction.
What a contractor does differently than DIY:
Surface-level crack filler addresses the visible gap. A contractor assessing a structural crack evaluates the base beneath the slab, checks whether the slab has moved vertically or horizontally, determines what caused the crack, and recommends a repair or replacement approach that addresses the actual cause rather than the symptom.
For significant cracks, this may involve mudjacking to lift and level a settled section, base regrading before a partial or full replacement, or full slab replacement in cases where the base has failed across a significant area. None of these are DIY options, and none of them are visible from looking at the crack alone.
Why Concrete Driveways Crack in Stockton
Understanding what caused the crack tells you how likely the same problem is to recur after repair. In Stockton and the San Joaquin Valley, the most common causes are:
Clay soil movement. Much of San Joaquin County has clay-heavy soil that expands when wet and contracts during dry periods. That seasonal movement puts stress on concrete slabs from below. A driveway on a properly compacted aggregate base handles this movement better than one poured on native clay with inadequate base preparation.
Insufficient slab thickness. A slab poured thinner than the load it carries will crack under vehicle weight. Age and normal wear. Concrete that has been in service for 25 or more years has been through thousands of thermal cycles, decades of vehicle loading, and years of weather exposure. Some cracking at this age is normal and expected. The question is whether the cracking is cosmetic or structural and what the rest of the slab looks like.
